Nomura

Following the successful completion of the Watermark Place (now One Angel Lane) base building works the new tenant Nomura required specific adaptations. These include a new 216 seat auditorium inserted between floors, infills to atriums, new bridges across the main atrium, adaptations to the building envelope to suit the specific requirements within, and new taxi/chauffer drop of points outside and within the building.

The aim of the design was to create a flexible and functional approach to the new auditorium. Enhancements to the circulation were incorporated to form a natural progression through the existing building. Rooms were transformed into spill-out spaces to cope with various demands before and after presentations. Ancillary spaces and amenities cater for various usage scenarios. The auditorium itself is a sculptural pod within the existing fabric.

The ‘box within a box’ derives not only from the intention to acknowledge the auditorium is a special environment inserted into an office building but that at the same time it enables the design to deal with the acoustic requirements in isolation. Its organic shape is a direct response to the existing facades and proximate building form with a curved screen reflecting this idea once inside the auditorium. The material palette compliments the existing with the juxtaposition of natural and sustainable materials.
