Fletcher Priest, in collaboration with Sauerbruch Hutton, developed the masterplan for the large site on Ludgate Hill, the City’s ceremonial route to St. Paul’s. Stretching back along the Old Bailey to the Central Criminal Court, it will include 34, 850m2 of new offices and retail space.
60 Ludgate Hill and 30 Old Bailey will replace a pair of existing buildings from the 1960s, such that the streetscape of the entire site is transformed. A new public space will be created between them which, inspired by the theatrical Piazza di San Ignazio in Rome, also addresses a distinctive historical terracotta façade on Old Bailey.
Amber cathedral glass provides colour to the piazzetta frontage, and a high level double-height loggia on the top floors reveals a dramatic view of the Cathedral west front and dome.
Working with landscape architects Gustafson Porter, streetscape improvements include remedial work to existing disconnected pavement levels and the introduction of a new public thoroughfare across the site that will connect the sweeping curved frontages along Old Bailey, Ludgate Hill and Limeburner Lane. Wider pavements and tree planting will benefit the new shops, cafes and restaurants, and selected landscaping for the roof terrace will provide year round texture and colour.
30 Old Bailey has been designed by Sauerbruch Hutton.
