The City has granted planning consent for 470,000 ft² new office buildings for TIAA-CREF
Angel Court is an important site located at the very heart of the City, equidistant from the Bank of England and the cluster of new office towers to the east.
Our design reconfigures the existing office tower into a distinctive addition to the City skyline. The proposal for a highly sustainable building retains the existing tower core and below ground structure, and with its new floors, servicing and high-performance cladding targets a BREEAM Excellent rating.
Our brief was to design a future proofed building with sufficient flexibility to meet anticipated 2013 energy standards. This has been achieved through careful consideration of the façade and services design resulting in energy savings of 74% when compared to the existing building.
The smooth curves and translucent form of the new 25 storey tower are achieved with floor to ceiling glazing, and a ceramic fritted pattern that provides solar protection as well as uninterrupted views across the City.
New podium buildings either side of the tower, expand the public space at street level by 35%, adding restaurants and cafes along Throgmorton Street and Copthall Avenue, and entrances on a widened and enhanced Angel Court.
Large open podium level floor plates are designed with large windows for good day lighting and adjustable external louvres that can be angled to protect exposed facades from overheating or to deflect day light deep into the office space. Clad in a rough honed grey limestone, the lower blocks frame the smooth surfaces of the tower.
Extensive landscaped roof terraces are accessible to all occupants and sculptural glazed roof lights above the first floor office reception create a dramatic day-lit space at the very heart of the building.
